Microsoft has officially rebranded the Microsoft 365 app to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. The change, which began rolling out on January 15th, 2025, signals a bold new chapter for Microsoft 365 — one defined by deep integration with AI.

If you use the Microsoft 365 app for work, school, or personal productivity, here’s everything you need to know about this transition, what’s changed, what’s stayed the same, and how it impacts your experience.

What has changed?

The Microsoft 365 app (previously known as Office) is now called the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

This rebrand includes:

  • A new app name and icon across Windows, iOS, Android, and the web.

  • A new web address: m365.cloud.microsoft (replacing office.com and microsoft365.com, which now redirect).

  • Enhanced AI capabilities thanks to the integration of Microsoft Copilot.

So, while the core functionality stays familiar — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, file access, and collaboration — the AI-powered productivity features have taken centre stage. The app now supports a deeper, more intuitive way to create, communicate, and collaborate with AI at the heart of your workflow.

Why the name change?

This isn’t just a visual refresh. Microsoft’s decision to rename the app to Microsoft 365 Copilot reflects the evolving role of AI in productivity.

Since Copilot was introduced in 2023, Microsoft has been weaving AI tools throughout its ecosystem — from helping you write better emails in Outlook to generating presentations in PowerPoint. Now, that the AI assistant has become a core part of the app’s identity.

Copilot: not just a Chatbot

Microsoft 365 Copilot is not a separate app bolted onto the rest of the M365 stack. It's baked directly into the user experience. The new app lets you:

  • Ask natural language questions to retrieve documents or insights.

  • Draft emails, reports, or presentations with AI assistance.

  • Summarise meetings, generate ideas, and even build automations.

  • Access Copilot Chat directly within the Microsoft 365 Copilot app (depending on your plan).

This isn’t the Microsoft 365 of old. It’s your AI-enhanced productivity hub — whether you're at work, school, or home.

Who gets access to Microsoft 365 Copilot features?

Not everyone will see the same Copilot features out of the box. It depends on your account type and subscription.

For Work and School Accounts (Entra ID):

  • Copilot Chat is included for:

  • Includes integration across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and more.

For Personal Accounts (Microsoft Account):

  • Copilot Chat is available only to:

    • Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers (primary account holders).

    • Microsoft Copilot Pro subscribers.

  • Users on free Microsoft accounts will not get access to Copilot Chat.

Note: If Copilot isn’t available in your region yet, the “Copilot” tab will not appear in the app interface—but the app will still be branded as Microsoft 365 Copilot.

What platforms are affected?

The rebrand to Microsoft 365 Copilot applies everywhere you use Microsoft 365:

  • Desktop: Windows (and macOS via web)

  • Mobile: iOS and Android apps

  • Web: Now found at m365.cloud.microsoft

Whether you're accessing your OneDrive files, editing a Word document, or scanning a PDF on mobile, you're using the same unified app.

Already using Microsoft 365? You don’t need to download anything new. Just update your app and ensure you’re online — the changes will apply automatically.

New domain: m365.cloud.microsoft

Microsoft continues to streamline its branding and domains, following the pattern set by other services like cloud.microsoft, teams.microsoft, and learn.microsoft.

The new Microsoft 365 Copilot app will live at:

The old URLs, including:

...will continue to redirect, so your bookmarks won’t break — but it's worth updating your links for consistency.

What you can do with Microsoft 365 Copilot app

If your plan includes Copilot functionality, here are just a few things you can ask it to do:

  • “Summarise this long Word document in bullet points.”

  • “Draft a project proposal based on these notes.”

  • “Create a PowerPoint deck using this meeting transcript.”

  • “Find the Excel file where we tracked Q4 budgets.”

  • “What’s the latest version of our IT policy document?”

Even for personal accounts, the AI support in writing, editing, and organising content can transform your digital life.

Do I need to do anything?

For most users, no action is required. The rebrand and feature rollout are handled automatically.

However, to ensure you’re seeing the latest version:

  1. Update your app on iOS/Android if you use it on mobile.

  2. Ensure you're connected to the internet.

  3. Restart the app if the name/icon hasn't changed yet.

For organisations managing M365 centrally, it’s worth notifying your teams about the update, especially if you offer training or documentation referencing the "Microsoft 365" app name.

What this means for businesses

For IT teams, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app represents a shift in how employees interact with productivity tools.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Boosted productivity: AI can reduce time spent on routine admin work.

  • Enhanced document handling: Summaries, auto-drafts, and formatting help teams move faster.

  • Improved user experience: One app to manage files, collaborate, and ask Copilot questions.

  • Cross-device continuity: Whether on desktop or mobile, the experience is seamless.

Companies leveraging Microsoft 365 Copilot can empower their employees to work smarter, not harder—with AI backing them every step of the way.

Final thoughts

Microsoft’s renaming of the Microsoft 365 app to Microsoft 365 Copilot is a signal that AI is now central to the Microsoft 365 experience.

From automatic summarisation to content generation, Microsoft 365 Copilot is redefining how we approach everyday tasks. For businesses, it’s a reminder to embrace AI not as a novelty — but as a core part of your modern workplace toolkit.

If you're not already exploring how Microsoft Copilot can streamline your organisation, now is the time to start.
