Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025 — that’s now just four months away (where has the time gone?!). When we first started talking about this, there was about a year to prepare. But we’re in June now, and if you haven’t already taken action and upgraded, then time is running out.

For some people, the fix is easy. If you have a compatible device, you just need to run a software update to reach Windows 11. If your PC is too old to run Windows 11, then you’ll need to buy a new computer.

Will I lose my files by moving to Windows 11?

No, your files and stored in the cloud through OneDrive, or SharePoint for shared files. If you make sure your files are backed up, you’ll be able to access them straight away once you’re on Windows 11. Windows Backup can even help you save time by backing up settings, apps, and login credentials too, so your updated PC feels like home.

How is Windows 10 different to Windows 11?

  • Windows 11 brings a new user interface (UI) that’s proven to be easier on the eyes and more user friendly.
  • There are smart recommendations in File Explorer and Start Menu to find your most used files and apps quicker.
  • Passkeys are integrated with Windows Hello, so users can replace passwords with passkeys for fast and secure sign-ins.
  • Windows 11 remembers your settings when connecting to external displays, making redocking seamless.
  • Any speech, including Teams calls, can be instantly transcribed with captions.
  • Smart App Control only permits apps with good reputations to be installed on your PC.

Benefits of Windows 11

The main benefit of Windows 11 is the added security. Windows 11 is the most secure Windows ever built, covering anti-virus, firewall, and internet protections that help to protect against threats — built-in at no extra cost.

What happens if I don’t upgrade to Windows 11?

If you don’t upgrade to Windows 11 by 14th October 2025, your Windows 10 PC will still function. However, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, feature updates, or security updates/fixes. This means your PC will be at a much greater risk of malware or viruses.

Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 will also see performance and reliability issues after October 14th. While these applications will still run on Windows 10, support and updates for these apps will stop.

It’s really important that you take some time to review your current devices and ensure they’re all on Windows 11 by October 14th. The security risks are far too great to ignore.
